Track/Rail

The track is the base on which the stairlift chair travels. It is usually made from durable aluminum or steel, custom-fitted to the staircase — whether straight, curved, or spiral. The rail is securely mounted to the stairs, not the wall, ensuring stability without major structural modifications.

Chair/Seat Unit

The chair is ergonomically designed for comfort and safety. It typically features a padded seat, backrest, and foldable footrest. Armrests, seat belts, and swivel functions are included for ease of use, allowing users to safely get on and off the lift at the top and bottom landings.

Drive System

Most stairlifts use a rack-and-pinion or cable-driven motor system. The drive unit is integrated into the chair or under the seat and ensures a smooth, steady ride. Battery-powered models ensure the lift remains operational even during a power outage, while charging points are installed at the top and bottom of the track.

How do Stairlifts work?

The stairlift operates on a track system where the motorized chair moves smoothly along a rail mounted directly to the stairs, not the wall, ensuring a stable and safe ride.

An electric motor, often powered by rechargeable batteries, drives a gear or cable system that propels the chair up or down the track at a controlled and steady speed.

Sensors along the rail and under the footrest monitor for any obstacles. If an obstruction is detected, the stair lift automatically stops to prevent accidents.

At the top and bottom of the stairs, the lift’s swivel seat locks securely into place, allowing the user to get on and off safely without twisting dangerously on the staircase.

Safety brakes are built into the motor and drive system to instantly halt movement in case of mechanical failure or emergency, preventing any uncontrolled descent.

A manual override and easy-to-use remote controls allow the stair lift to be operated safely and conveniently, even during a power outage or unusual situations.
